I enjoyed reading through Deuteronomy this week. I kept expecting Moses to die in Leviticus because that is when God started talking about it. So, it was fun to read all of the things he needed to tell Israel before he died. All the things God felt were the most important for them to know or remember. Plenty to think about in this book!

I’m still on track and I appreciate your prayers and encouragement on facebook!

As I was reading all of the many specific laws and rules I started thinking about our values. Where do our values come from? Why do we place a high value on feeding the hungry, or applaud when someone is kind enough to help a blind man cross the street? We value these things because we have the Words of Jesus, and He has taught us to Love One Another. Loving one another dictates that we behave a certain way. The Israelites had this command from Leviticus: “ Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” But they also had many specific situational laws to guide their day to day life. The man who mislead a blind man was punishable by God’s law. Having differing weights and measures was called out as wrong. Feeding the poor, widow and orphan was a command. It was expected. Just as those of us who live the Christian life today expect a certain standard of behavior among other Christians and teach that standard to our children.

I don’t know about you, but I spend significant amounts of time giving my children the laws of behavior. While I think that is important, I also need to focus more on my own example of selfless love. What does that look like?

I just read a wonderful book. I sometimes have trouble reading non-fiction. I enjoy non-fiction and I learn from non-fiction. But sometimes I have trouble reading a non-fiction book all the way through. It usually takes me at least a week. It seems like work. Let me just say that Wait No More by John and Kelly Rosati is not one of those non-fiction books.

I started the book during naptime in the early afternoon and finished it during Tae Kwon Do in the early evening. It’s that good.

The book chronicles the lives of John and Kelly as they journey towards and through four adoptions. Four different, difficult, and sometimes overwhelming adoptions. Throughout every trial and triumph John and Kelly grow closer to God and stronger in their faith. It might sound trite, but in reality it was a very powerful and gripping story.

All throughout the book, I was thinking of the families I know personally who have adopted children. One is a friend named Becky, who adopted two beautiful children from Russia. She told me once that the first year after the adoption was the most difficult year of her life. But, also one of the most wonderful. Reading Wait No More helped me understand a little bit more about what she meant. Another family I thought a lot about is the family of my sister who adopted two beautiful children from Columbia. Her journey has not been without difficulty either, but so very worth it.

Adoption is a high calling, and not for everyone. The question is — is it for you? Have you given it serious thought? Have you prayed about it? We are all called to take care of the orphans of this world — how can you fulfill that instruction in the book of James? This book is going to challenge you to think about adoption and orphans and foster care in a way you may never have considered before. Over 114,000 legal orphans are ready and waiting for adoption through foster care in the United States and that number will keep growing. If just one family from each of the 300,000 churches in our country would step forward and attempt to adopt one of those children we could have an orphan free country. Wow. That is a heady thought.

My Bottom Line: I hope you will consider getting and reading this book. It is already on the required reading list for my children. In fact, I am thinking of reading it aloud.

Disclaimer: i received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review on my blog. Here you have it. No further compensation was received and all of opinions expressed here are my own.

A Lasting Impression certainly made a lasting impression on me. I stayed up most of the night to read, captivated by the characters and lulled awake by the suspense. Every time I tried to close the book and go to sleep, images of the people in the book flashed through my mind, along with a myriad of questions.

As with most historical romance novels, I knew how this one would end. But that didn’t make the journey any less enjoyable. I haven’t read many novels set just after the civil war during Reconstruction and that was refreshing as well. I didn’t know anything about art forgeries during that time period and it was fun to learn a bit about that.

My Bottom Line: I enjoyed this book very much and recommend it to anyone who enjoys Christian historical fiction.

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from the publisher as part of the Christian Fiction Blog Alliance in exchange for an honest review on my blog. Here you have it. No further compensation was received.
