The preface hooked me. I read these words from Hope Auer: ”God doesn’t just want your respect. He wants your heart. He desires that all should come to be saved. And I wanted children, young adults, and adults to be able to read something that would encourage them and inspire them to spend more time in the Word studying God’s plan for the world and His plan for His Chosen People.” and I thought – “Oh, this is a book I can share with Clara (age 13) and Jonathan (age 11) and read aloud to Anna (age 8).” I am so excited when I find high quality books that are also age-appropriate and enticingly good.
I love to see young women standing firm in their beliefs and living for Jesus. Both the Author (Hope Auer) and the main character (Jarah) are living their lives for God. I read this book -A Cry From Egypt- from cover to cover and was delighted to see that I can recommend this book to my 13 year old without reservation. And yet:
I could not put it down!
I was drawn immediately into the plot (Israelites in Egypt), the characters (Israelite slaves in Egypt), the desperation of their lives and the impact of their choices. The main character of the story is a hard-working 12 year old slave girl who lives and works in Egypt with her family. Jarah is caught between her father who believes in Yahweh and her mother who worships the Egyptian gods. The Israelites are between a rock and a hard place. And, I just love a good ending!
My Bottom Line: If you or a young lady in your household enjoys historical Christian fiction with a bit of suspense this book will be a hit. Even though this books is written about a pre-Christian era, the Christian worldview is clearly presented in the lives of some of the Israelites. We love this book! A Cry From Egypt gets my highest recommendation.

Wow! I’ve never heard of the these bootcamps, but the 9-12 yr old bootcamp looks great. We have two boys in that age range and I’m sure my husband and I both would enjoy some training for the years to come! The book looks great too. Historical fiction is my favorite genre and since we will be studying Ancient Egypt this year, it looks like this book will fit right in. Thanks for the contest and thanks for sharing!

Wow, thank you for the review of this book. I am so excited about this book for my 13 year old daughter and as a read-aloud for my 8 year old son. I am always looking for books for her Literature Club that the other girls have not read yet, and I am so excited that this will be a series with 3 more books to come. Plus how exciting that the author is so young (20) and she began writing this book at the age of 13 – the age of my, and your, daughter and many of the girls in her Literature Club. I am also a BIG fan of Hal and Melanie and love their book “Raising Real Men”, they are so real and so amazing when you get a chance to meet them in person.
I have not heard of this author or book before I’m so excited that she is doing a writing series on her blog! I always wanted to write and with the children it has been difficult to shower much less take time to write.
Maybe reading her blog posts will be something that can be me back into it.

Really excited about Hope’s book! We’re beginning a new curriculum called A World of Adventure and at it’s heart the learning is birthed from reading….lots and lots of reading :0) Our first unit of study is on ancient Egypt and I think “A Cry From Egypt” will supplement our other main book so well!
