Scripture Memory — Charlotte Mason Style

A friend of mine was visiting today, and she mentioned a “new” method for Scripture memory which I thought sounded really interesting so I went and looked it up tonight at Simply Charlotte Mason.  It looks like a cool system, and it sounds like the hardest part would be the set-up.  Supposedly it only takes five minutes per day.  My friend does this with her family in the evenings and it is working really well for them.  We are going to keep on with AWANA, so I was trying to decide if this would be a great way to organize and keep reviewing our AWANA verses.

You know the old saying “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it…”  Well, I think that might apply in this situation.  The problem is, one of my children really is starting to struggle with the length and breadth of some of the upper level AWANA  verses.  She did manage to finish this year, but it was a struggle to the end.  I was trying to decide if this index box/card method would work for helping her keep on track and move forward.  Unfortunately, she is also the most resistent to change and I am not sure she will go for the idea.

Trying to decide how to present it to her, and then let her choose.

I definitely would not want to set up a different box for each child though; so it would either be just for the oldest or I would only use family verses and not do it for AWANA.

What do you think?

  • It’s just a “new” system for us. ;) I love it because it works on remembering what you’ve memorized. All of my big kids did excellent in terms of memorizing verses for Awana or Bible class. I’m not sure they remembered them for more than a week, though. For our family, it keeps all the verses (Awana or ones we chose) close to our hearts.

If you are just looking for a way to help with Awana verses, I don’t think this plan would help unless she plans to do the Rave Review at the end of the book.

  • Well, she did do the Rave Review this year by the skin of her teeth. But, we are starting on the verses this summer to try to give her more time next year. She was working a ton of hours on AWANA last year; and part of that was because she was trying to do the silvers and golds and then finally realized that she did not have time to finish the more difficult ones. But part of it is also because the verses are getting longer. I am sure she will want to do rave review next year if she can.

  • Addison did one Rave review, but didn’t get to do the rest. She started as a fifth grader and finished 1.5 books the first year (with the gold and the rave review). This year she *just* did the remaining 2.5 books.
